Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

Description

Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Gale has escaped. Katniss's family is safe. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding.

It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plains--except Katniss.

The success of the rebellion hinges on Katniss's willingness to be a pawn, to accept responsibility for countless lives, and to change the course of the future of Panem. To do this, she must put aside her feelings of anger and distrust. She must become the rebels' Mockingjay--no matter what the personal cost.

Opinion

I don't think I liked this one. There were some things that Collins made happed that I don't think I agree with. It was resonable and realistic but maybe that's why I didn't like it. You know how on TV you'll see movies about the war that they made fiction and it's just fine? Well, this is fiction that's made to seem like it could actually happen and I don't think I like it. It's SO convincing that this could be real that it's scary to me. I don't know if switching it up makes the book better for you are what, but to me it made it scarier than any horror book I've ever read.

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

Description

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

Opinion

To be honest, I really don't know what my opinion of this book is. I have mixed feelings of this book. I like/hate it. I don't even know why I like/hate it. All I know is that it was good in a terrible way....if you know what I'm talking about.....I hope you do because I'm confused myself. I like the constant love triangle between Peeta, Gale, and Katniss (Although I really think she should just reallize that she likes Peeta more). I don't really care for all the war talk. I don't like war, and Collins describes it perfectly. I dont like when I read about the Capitol killing people randomly because I can see that actually happening in the future. I don't know....I just don't like that part.

Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Description

Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games." The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat's sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

Opinion

I originally read this book because we were reading this book in English class last year. I never got around to reading the whole series, hence why I'm reading it again. I like this book because I think Collins did a good job with her story plot and story set up. She's really good at describing things enough to where we get it but it's not over descriptive. Like with books that take three pages to describe a brick wall, she doesn't do that. I like how Katniss pretty much flips off the capitol at the end. Gives them the whole "screw you" without even saying anything at all. I suspect she's going to get in trouble for that later though. Anyways, really good book I'd recommend it to anyone.

Better of Undead by DD Barant

Description

Dark magic, unknown enemies, monsters of every stripe—FBI profiler Jace Valchek has seen it all. In this bizarre parallel universe, shape-shifting werewolves and blood-thirsty vampires don’t even warrant a raised eyebrow. That is, until Jace has to face what life might look like as one of them …

It starts off as just another run-of-the-mill assignment: to track down the rogue don of a mafia werewolf family before he upsets the delicate balance of the underworld. But Jace wasn’t counting on being bitten…and soon she’s fighting the growing wolf inside her with a startling antidote—vampirism. Stopping a bloody gangland war won’t be easy when Jace is feeling some new, and very inhuman, desires …

Opinion

I really like this book, too. I don't agree with Jace though. I think I wouldn't like to be a minority of humans in a thropirelem world (lycanthrope, vampire, and golem). I have always been apart of the "Team Vampire" so I think her trying to become a human by fighting the vampire cells with the lycanthropic cells is stupid. I would just have them fight the lycanthropic cells with the vampire cells to become a vampire. It would be so much better than having to worry about your humanity every moment of every day. That's just what I would do though. I can understand why she chose not to do that though. She wants to go home SOMETIME. I'd want to be able to see my family, too and if she becomes a vampire that wouldn't happen.

Killing Rocks by DD Barant

Description

FBI profiler Jace Valchek’s ticket home from the twisted parallel universe where she’s been called to duty hinges on the capture of serial killer Aristotle Stoker—and an alliance with a sorcerer known as Asher. The problem: Asher has joined forces with some of the most dangerous creatures Jace has ever encountered. The solution: There is none, without Asher’s help…

Jace’s goal seems simple enough—to get her man, like always. But just hours after she arrives in Vegas, she’s abducted…and she isn’t even sure who the real enemy is. Now Jace has to wonder if she’s the predator or the prey in a very dangerous game that could change not only her fate, but the world’s…Meanwhile, a serial killer is still on the loose. And time has already run out…

Opinion

I thought this was an amazing book. I liked how they added a war between the lems (golems or walking talking bags of sand) and the thropires (lycanthropes and vampires united front. The way they describe the war and how her partner is on the side of the lems is cool. Even though the lems are terrorizing the town and the minority of humans...which includes Jace. It's all described really well and is so good I had to keep reading. Infact I finished this book in three hours.

Death Blows by DD Barant

Description

FBI profiler Jace Valchek was pulled into this parallel realm to hunt for Aristotle Stoker, a human serial killer who preys on vampires and werewolves. Now she works for the National Security Agency of the Unnatural States of America—and her boss is a vampire.

At a bizarre crime scene, Jace finds a bloodsucker murdered by magic, fried to the bone and dressed in the costume of the comic book hero the Flash—a character who isn’t supposed to exist here. Comic books have been outlawed for their powers, including crossover spells like the one that transported Jace to this world. Soon, she’s following a trail of dead bodies into the sinister underworld of black-market comics—where a deranged madman gives new meaning to the term “super-villain”…

My opinion

I like how they cleverly mix not normal with normal in this book. Jace Velchek is dealing with comic book that form the Kamic cult. It's so creative. I really like Jace as a charector. I like how she's insicure, sarcatic, and cocky about what she does. I still don't agree with her going after the human race but I'm getting more ok with it. I like the charector Cassius also. I think Cassius and Jace should just get over their insicurities and just hook up already. Plus the way Barant describes Cassius as a Surfer boy that actually has brains, is hot. I can almost picture him in my mind and I want to date him, too.

Funny quote from Dying Bites by DD Barrant

When I see Cassius, I'm going to give that ancient, scheming, always-one-step-ahead bastard a great big hug.

(next chapter)

"You ancient, scheming, always-one-step-ahead bastard." I say, and punch him in the nose.
Okay, so I changed my mind.

I hate these days. The days that you are so busy in school that you're to busy to read your book. It's so stressful. I'm reading a book in American English right now that's keeping me away from reading the books that I want to read. "read 100 pages over the weekend". When you have to work on weekends you have no time to read the 100 pages AND the book that you wanna read. Well, like I was saying, if you're wondering why I'm not posting anything new right now that's why. (and I really don't want to bother writing about The Grapes of Wrath).

Dying Bites by D D Barant

Description

Her job description is the “tracking and apprehension of mentally-fractured killers.” What this really means in FBI profiler Jace Valchek’s brave new world—one in which only one percent of the population is human—is that a woman’s work is never done. And real is getting stranger every day…

Jace has been ripped from her reality by David Cassius, the vampire head of the NSA. He knows that she’s the best there in the business, and David needs her help in solving a series of gruesome murders of vampires and werewolves. David’s world—one that also includes lycanthropes and golems—is one with little knowledge of mental illness. An insane serial killer is a threat the NSA has no experience with. But Jace does. Stranded in a reality where Bela Lugosi is a bigger box office draw than Bruce Willis and every full moon is Mardi Gras, Jace must now hunt down a fellow human before he brings the entire planet to the brink of madness. Or she may never see her own world again…

My Opinion

So I really like this book. Although I'm kinda upset. I don't think that a human being should help vampires kill human beings when the human beings are just trying to survive in this ulternate universe. If she lived in this alternate universe for her whole life she would be trying to kill these vamps and lycanthropes, too.

Thirst No. 4 (final review)

Ok so I've been done with this book for a while honestly and I just forgot to blog about it. The end of the book was a lot better that the beggining. The begging was really slow. It seemed like you were reading the same thing over and over again through every paragraph. The end was a little bit better. All in all though I wouldn't recomend this book. It was kinda a drag.

Thirst No. 4 by: Christopher Pike

This book started out so amazing. I love it when writers start exactly where they left off in the last book. It makes the story have more depth. I havn't gotten that far so I don't know exactly what else to say.....yeah......

Thirst No. 3 (final review)

I was really happy about the end of this book. It was almost exactly like I wanted it to end. The few twists at the end really contributed to the whole book. It made the book a lot more interesting. The book started really slow. So slow that I almost gave up on it. By the end though, I was really into the book. It was really good. It turned out way better then I expected.

Thirst No. 3 by: Christopher Pike

I really don't like the beggining of this one in the series. It's like the author didn't like what he wrote about in the last two and he made up some poor excuse of why those things didn't REALLY happen. In the other two books he talks about how Sita and Seymore are best friends, and in the last one Christopher killed off Sita's charector. Like he was ending the series. It was a great ending to the series, but he brings her back by saying that Seymore and her mind connected and she didn't actually know him. He wrote her story but she never actually knew him. To me that sounds like just an excuse to write about Sita some more. You killed her off Christopher get over it. Instead of writing about Sita still, he should have wrote about Lalita, Sita's daughter. He should have told us the hidden part of the story. Maybe Yaksha changed Lalita into a vampire, too. WHen she was older, he came back and "as a present to Sita" he changed her. But he never got a chance to tell her. Now THAT would be a story to tell.

Thirst No. 2 by: Christopher Pike

This one in the series is a little slower in my opinion. they go on with the same problems as the last one. a little different, but basically the same concept. they have different situations, but the same concept. and they go on like that throughout the book. Don't get me wrong they bring more insight into Sita/Alisa's ancient past and I like the stories about Suzama's ancient scriptures and stuff but, i just have to say that for me it drags a little, that's all.

Thirst (Final Review)

As I said the last time, I love these series. There are some thing I noticed though, while reading the ending, that I don't like at all. All throughout the story they are trying to convince you of the posibility that there are real vampires in the world, but in the ending the author makes the vampire do crazy things. Vampires do not turn into ghosts, I'm sorry, but it just doesn't happen. Leave the two different stories alone. There different. There are no dots to connect there. If your trying to convince us of something don't change your mind at the end and have her do something that's imposible. Also, I don't like how Sita/Alisa is always losing the people she grows to love. They all die the same way, too. They all get blown up. Seriously, get creative at least. That's all I'm asking. I hope the second one is more creative. (I've read it before but I forgot what it was about. Same with the third one.)

Thirst by Christopher Pike

Ive read this book about three times already, but everytime I read it I am amazed by how.... amazing it is. I have to admit, it starts a little slow and some of the wording is a little too...proper I guess you could say. I love that in the rest of the book though. One thing in this book that I like the most is the way Christopher explains the murder scenes. Its explained with kind of a heartless quality, which is awesome because the main character is a five-thousand year old vampire that has killed many times. I don't know, but it seems like all other vampire writers should read this book. Vampires shouldn't be squeamish about blood and guts and it seems like they are nowadays. Or maybe its the authors that are squeamish. Seriously, read this book and judge for yourself!

The Scorpio Races by: Maggie Stiefvater

I have read many books, and this book amazed me by how good it was. I have never really liked reading about animals, I prefer books that turn mythology and legend into truth and reality. To combine those two together though was an act of pure genious. It was a very refreshing book to read after the last book I read...just saying. Where that book took me a week to read, this book took only a day and a half, and this book was bigger by a couple hundred pages.

Huckleberry Finn by: Mark Twain

I was made to read this book by my English Teacher and I have to tell you, I wasn't very excited about it. I'm halfway through the book and it seems that I got nowhere with it. The lack of a plot might have been adventurous and daring when it was written but NOW it seems to be lacking something that is needed to write a "good book". Without a plot books take you nowhere. The idea that Mark Twain was called an artist for writing in the language of the time is almost revolting. You can barely understand it, and who told him that it was a good idea? You get confused because the charectors are speaking in third person. Books are a way to travel to places you've never been, but I'm almost ready to pack up and head home.

Big Bad Wolf by: Chrinstine Warran (first and final review)

The book Big Bad Wolf was a very unique book. I was both awwed and ewwed out by the strange customes of the Lupines. Again, I think Christine Warran really needs a new editor. For the most part the editing job wasn't that bad in this book but the editor didn't notice the most noticeable mistakes you could ever make. Besides that though, I thought that this book was an amazing book, and I plan on trying to read some more of her books in the future.
